Spring is my favorite time on the farm. The pasture is lush and green, the animals are full of life and energy, birth is everywhere. But so is death. We have our greatest predator pressure on our poultry flocks in the spring. The eagles and crows and ravens are brooding their young and the increased demand for food causes them to attack our chickens and ducks mercilessly. It’s a very disheartening experience to see the carnage in the field, but I also know it’s part of the price we pay when farming in harmony with nature. She takes her tithe.
